If you’re like most instructors and trainers, your work has been disrupted in the past few months. As a result, you might have been searching for alternative ways to stay on top of things.

If you are thinking about giving home workouts a try, this is the perfect place to start. Recording high-quality video workouts is the first step in building a strong client base and earning money remotely.

Here are 6 tips on how to make the most out of your recordings.

1. Equipment

Try to keep your workout equipment neutral so avoid wearing bright colours and large accessories. This will help people focus on your moves instead of your clothes.

2. Background

Find a space that’s free of clutter. This can be a clean room in your house, an empty gym or a private spot in a park. If possible, choose a solid background like a wall to record against and make sure to create contrast between your equipment and the background.

3. Lighting

Have at least one light source pointed towards you. Natural light is ideal so try to record next to a window or outdoor. When you record outside, avoid direct sunlight. Artificial light can also work if placed in a flattering angle, coming from the side and slightly above you.

4. Setup

Place your phone on a tripod or ask someone to record you. The phone should be approximately 4 meters (13 feet) away from you, at least 1 meter (3 feet) off the ground, in landscape position — this will help you get rid of those black bars on the sides of your video.

5. Framing

Place your mattress at a 45-degree angle from your phone and make sure your body fits completely in the frame when staying still. Don’t worry if your hands go out of frame when lifted.

6. Audio

It’s hard to focus on your workout routine and explain at the same time so consider recording the video without sound. Then record the voiceover separately in a quiet place using your phone or a plug-in microphone.

More useful tips

  • Make sure your phone’s battery is fully charged before you begin recording
  • Switch your phone to Airplane Mode before filming to reduce distractions and increase battery life
  • Make sure there are no visible product logos (except your own) inside the frame. A random water bottle or Starbucks cup can be a huge distraction
  • Don’t forget to have fun while doing it! 😊
